Your Ajody Score: What It Is, and Why It Matters More Than You Think
Most Nigerians have no credit history. Not bad credit — none at all.
You can pay your rent for ten years, run a market stall profitably for fifteen, contribute faithfully to every ajo you have ever joined, and still walk into a bank as a complete stranger. The system has no record of you, so it assumes the worst.
This is not a small problem. It is why loan interest rates are punishing, why collateral requirements are impossible, why a business that could grow with ₦500,000 never gets it. Nigeria has licensed credit bureaus — CRC, FirstCentral, CreditRegistry — and banks do check them. But they only see formal borrowing. The disciplined saving that millions of Nigerians actually do is invisible.
What your Ajody score measures
Every Ajody member holds a score out of 100. It moves on one thing: whether you keep your word.
- Contributing on time holds it steady
- Completing a full cycle proves reliability
- Lateness lowers it, day by day
- Default at twenty-one days flags your verified identity permanently
Your score travels with you. Join a new circle and the admin sees your standing before they approve you. Reach 80 and Roll It Forward opens — the ability to compound a payout into a new circle. Some circles will not accept members below a threshold at all.
Be clear about what it is not
Your Ajody score is not a credit bureau score. Today it does not affect your bank loan application, your mortgage, or your BVN-linked credit report. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something.
What it is: a real, portable record of financial reliability, built from behaviour that has never been recorded anywhere before.
Where this is going
Nigeria's credit bureaus accept data from licensed providers. A future in which consistent ajo contributions count toward formal creditworthiness is technically possible and legally complicated — it requires regulatory approval, explicit consent from every member, and partnerships we have not yet built. We will not pretend it exists before it does.
But we are recording the right thing, from the beginning, with verified identity attached. That is the foundation such a system would need.
Why it matters now
Even inside Ajody, your score does real work. It gets you into better circles. It gets you trusted with earlier positions. It is the reason strangers can save together at all.
Your circle knows you. That has always been how ajo worked. Now the record survives the circle.
